Social Success

We will be offering ongoing social skills groups facilitating social/pragmatic skills, as well as self-regulation skills within a supportive social environment. Each group includes 3-5 peers. The final demographics of each group will depend on their incoming skill level, age range, and personality matches. Social skills groups are co-taught by Heather Brownie, M.S., OTR/L and Shana Kelly, M.S., CCC-SLP.

Description of Social Group:

We are so excited about the opportunity to offer more social groups within our clinic! We have had so much success with our past groups and look forward to working with more children and their families.

Our groups are 90 minutes. We structure the groups to include:

1) Greetings to facilitate greetings, initiation with peers, asking/answering questions, topic maintenance, eye contact, and coversational turn taking with peers.

2) Engine speeds to determine if our bodies are in high speed (excited, frustrated, etc.), just right speed (organized and ready to learn), or low speed (tired, sad, etc.). Further information will be provided regarding sensory processing and engine speeds.

3) Participate in sensory activities to get in a "just right speed."

4) Read a social story that is based on individual and group needs. Some examples include taking turns, beginning a good sport (such as winning and losing games), compromise, etc.

5) Participate in an activity and practice our new skill including competitive and noncompetitive games, craft projects, etc.

6) Prepare a snack or sensory activity to facilitate increased exposure to new foods, textures, sounds, etc. Food preparation also fosters sequencing, following directions, and sensory exploration. We have found this to be very successful for many of our clients who are limited in their food repertoire. Please notify us of any food sensitivities or allergies as we accomodate and prepare snacks that everyone can eat.

7) Saying goodbye to our friends and meeting the parents.

Fee Schedule:

The cost for the social skills group will be $150.00 per session and includes 1.5 hours of treatment from an occupational and speech therapist. Private pay clients will receive a 20% discount (i.e. $120.00 per session) off of the total group price, as it saves us billing time. We will submit claims to insurance companies for services rendered. However, Premera, Regence, Aetna, and Molina are the only insurance companies for which we can bill occupational therapy services. Please see the following fee schedule:

Activity and Planning Fee:   $35.00 (out of pocket fee for all clients)

Speech and Language Fee:  $65.00 (billable)

Occupational Therapy Fee:  $50.00 (billable for Premera, Regence, Aetna, and Molina clients)

Please notify us of any sessions your child will be unable to participate in, as sessions will be prorated. A $50.00 late cancellation fee will be charged for any cancellations within 24 hours of a session, as a child's absence affects group dynamics.

Please do not hestitate to call either Heather or Shana with any questions or concerns. Parent references available upon request. Social skills groups are very rewarding for all involved and we are excited for this opportunity. We are looking forward to a fun group and hope that you and your child can be a part of it!
